How Mnemonic Strategies Can Improve Your Child's Memory Skills In One Evening

What's one of the things all successful students have in common? The can memorize easily. They remember the facts and details of battles in history, the formulas in math and the unending list of elements in science.

So what can you do to help your child develop memory strategies that can instantly help them be more successful in school?

The answermnemonic memorizing techniques!

They're fun, simple and incredibly effective. And in one evening you can show your child how to apply them to any vocabulary list, series of facts and figures, or just plain remembering what to do after coming home from school.

Who uses mnemonics?

According to Dr. Joel Levin, Educational Psychologist at the University of Arizona, " Many folks - motivated students included - use memory enhancing techniques, especially when there's a 'memory payoff,' such as obtaining higher academic grades or admission to some elite professional school or graduate program."

To put it simply, mnemonics are memory aids that help make a connection between what you already know and what you need to remember. You probably use mnemonics in your daily life and don't even know it. (Does "I before E except after C" ring a bell?).

How about the order of the planets? (My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas - look at the first letter of each word in that sentence and you'll have the names of the planets, in their correct order).

All you need to do is follow one of the three memory strategies I'll list here and you can help your child create funny (goofy is ok, too) and effective mnemonics starting tonight.

First method: Acronyms.

Take the first letter of the series of words you need to memorize and make a word out of them. The more famous acronyms we have are SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

Ask your son or daughter if there's a list of vocabulary, facts or figures they need to learn for tomorrow or the next day and see if you can help them come up with an acronym.

Second method: Acrostics

Take the first letter of a series of words you need to learn and create a sentence. In my Spanish classes, we have many acrostics (it's easier to just call them mnemonics). One in particular is for "-GO" verbs in the present tense (Harry Potter Teaches Cool Students - Hacer, Poner, Traer, Caer, Salir).

I also remember an acrostic from an 8th grade math class: Old Houses Are Houses Of Age - (Sine) - Opposite/Hypotenuse, (Cosine) - Adjacent/Hypotenuse, (Tangent) - Opposite/Adjacent). Other friends of mine from different schools learned the mnemonic SOACAHTOA.

Third method: Keyword

Take the word you want to learn, find a similar sounding word (or similar spelling) and come up with a sentence that includes the keyword and the meaning you're trying to remember.

This approach works beautifully in my Spanish classes. Let's say your child wants to learn the verb "Dormir" (to sleep). You decide on a keyword (we'll use dorm) and then you create a sentence. My class came up with "Norm sleeps in the dorm."

When you add an illustration to this sentence, it helps your child remember even more quickly, and retain it longer.

Why aren't mnemonics used more often in schools? That's a good question. Levin, who's studied mnemonics for over 25 years and understands their effectiveness better than most, considers it "a mystery."

Anyone of these mnemonic techniques will work depending on the material. It all comes down to finding the best one for your son or daughter.

And they can be learned (and applied) in one night. That means your child can improve their memory skills from one day to the next.

Jim Sarris has been teaching Spanish for 15 years. He's used mnemoncs with great success in his high school classess as well as at night with adults.

Increase Your Sexual Health: How to Have Great Sex

Who doesnt want great I mean, really great sex? Our sexual health is dependent on it. Of course, there is no magic snap your fingers and have a great sex life equation. Good sexual health takes a lot of hard work and time invested with a partner that you are truly intimate with. This article will detail some ideas and options to turn your bedroom activities into something truly amazing.

Your Sexual Health: Just Let Go
When you try and control your sexual, its just not healthy. Instead, just let go. Allow things to happen as they will! This will release the pressure for amazing sex not only on you, but your partner, too.

Your Sexual Health: Its All about Attitude
Allow yourself the luxury of just being in the moment, and enjoying every healthy sexual experience that you have. This means that you need to let go of all the negative associations you have with sex, and that includes guilt, shame, remorse, anger, frustration or fear.

Your Sexual Health: Lets Talk
In order to have a healthy sexual life, you need to talk to your partner, and often. The more you can communicate your needs, wants and desires and listen to the same from your partner the better of a sex life youll have. Feel empathy. Let them know that you love and cherish them. Be a good listener. And if you need, or want something, dont hesitate to ask for it.

Your Sexual Health: Food for Thought
Over time, the feelings you have for your partner may have dwindled a bit. So how you do kick start that passionate, swept away emotion again? Feed them. Find out what really creates those types of intense feelings and emotions for your partner, and then feed them regularly. It could be as simple as going for a walk down the street hand in hand, or listening to some sexy music together, cuddled up on the couch.

Your Sexual Health: Self-Love
If you are always thinking about your body, and not about the great sex you are supposed to be having, then how can you really enjoy anything? Release those pent-up feelings about your sexual health and how you present physically. Think about what makes you feel good about your body, and focus on those things, and traits, instead.

Your Sexual Health: Try New Things
Once again, this tip is leading to the release of negative thoughts, associations and feelings that you have regarding sexual health and activities. Why not be adventurous, and try something new in the bedroom with your partner this week? Do something small, differently. Read up a bit on the Internet on some tools and tricks to try and then spend some time with your partner!

Your Sexual Health: Practice Safely
It should go without saying, but any sexual encounters should remain healthy and safe and all times. The last think you want to think about during incredible sex is if you lost the condom, or if you remembered to take a pill earlier in the day. Plan in advance, and make sure to have everything ready before the fun begins.

Satellite Radio: XM and Sirius Battle for Your $$$

Satellite Radio is the future of broadcasting

Satellite Radio, in short, can be described as commercial-free music, news, sports and talk shows. Many of the biggest players and events are now available from Sirius radio and XM radio like Howard Stern, Fred Schneider (the B52s), NFL, English Soccer, NBA, NASCAR, NHL, Major League Baseball, INDY, and the PGA.

Satellite radio began in 1992, when the S spectrum was allocated by the FCC to four companies. While automobile manufacturers started installing satellite radio in 2001 and 2002, most new vehicles come equipped with one now. XM has two satellites (called Rock and Roll) in parallel orbits to cover the mainland US market, while Sirius has three. Both have recently been awarded licenses for the Canadian market.
